Speak Up, Stand Out – Masterclass Overview

Speak Up, Stand Out is a one-day teacher training masterclass in Florence, Italy that will guide you through the foundations of communication and classroom management. It’s designed to help you take the stress out of teaching young English Language (ESL) learners and express yourself effectively inside (and outside) of the classroom.

The Masterclass covers everything you need to know about the most important drivers to successful communication — the stuff that no one ever tells us.

The day is packed with simple hands-on strategies to help you use what you already know, love, and do (teaching!) to become a more confident, influential, and impactful communicator.

You’ll learn the best-kept acting secrets, develop your voice to its full potential, and learn positive body language techniques that make you feel both confident and relaxed, even in anxious teaching situations.

You’ll come away with a unique set of skills and actionable steps that you can put into practice in class straight away. We’re only as good as we can communicate, so let’s get on the fast track to clarity, renewed energy, and results!

The course takes place in Florence on Saturday, May 18th, with registration beginning at 10:00 am. The course runs from 10:30 am to 5:00 pm, including a one-hour lunch break.

It's tailored to English language teachers who work with pre-schoolers, elementary or teen learners.

The Secret Keys to Classroom Connection

What qualities make a good teacher great?

Ask anyone, and they'll likely point to Empathy, Patience, Passion for teaching, Creativity, and Adaptability.

However, Effective Communication Skills come out on top.

When we step into a classroom, it’s important not only WHAT we teach our young language learners but also HOW we teach.

And that’s where things can get sticky.

Because first impressions matter!

Research tells us that people draw conclusions about others within 5 seconds of meeting them.

They make judgments based not just on our appearance, but also on our body language, facial expressions, and whether we look confident or nervous, happy or sad, tired or energised.

And that’s even before we say hello!

And you know what?

Students, whether they're children or teens, pick up on these same things super-fast!

To them, teachers are like a 5-second movie trailer on Netflix. If we don't make a positive impact straight away, they switch off. And getting them back is a real challenge.

Unfortunately, no one teaches us good communication — the kind that enables us to make an instant connection with students. It’s just assumed that we know how to do it.

“You know how to speak!

You know how to move!

Okay, then, just start teaching!”

But when independent teachers know that appearing and sounding confident and assertive can influence whether new students sign up for our courses, they feel a lot of pressure to get it right.

The good news is that good communication is a skill that can be learned.

Just like we can learn to ski (but way less risky)!

And in this one-of-a-kind workshop, I’ll walk you through a surprisingly simple process that will transform your teaching.

You’ll learn core skills that will help you to become more influential and impactful inside (and outside) of the classroom.

How can drama help?

Acting techniques are based on effective communication skills – they go together like bread and butter.

When actors step onto the stage, they use various strategies to grab their audience's attention. They need to project their voice, express emotions, exude confidence, and be adaptable and quick on their feet. If they miss a beat, they might get a tomato thrown at them (or at least in Shakespeare's time)!

These same acting techniques can also help teachers make a strong impact in the classroom and keep their student audience engaged and focused.

Acting techniques can help you transform the classroom atmosphere and students’ attention to manage the most challenging situations.

Unfortunately, communication skills can't be learned from a textbook or by simply being told to "communicate better!"

They require hands-on development and practice.

That's why I've designed a training course based on 25 years of experience as a professional actor and ESL Drama coach to help guide you in developing and, most importantly, practising these essential skills.

Who is the course for?

It's tailored to English language teachers who work with pre-schoolers and elementary and teen learners.

Whether you’re just starting out or are a seasoned teacher, the goal is to enhance your classroom communication skills, including how you speak and present yourself visually, to make teaching less stressful, more enjoyable, and more impactful.

This course is designed for you if:

  • Your class easily gets over- excited and distracted and you struggle to keep them focused.
  • Students frequently interrupt lessons with side-conversations or off-topic questions. They find it difficult to listen and follow instructions.
  • You often feel your throat is strained and you’re self-conscious about whether your voice is loud or clear enough
  • Your heart races, your voice trembles, and your hands shake when you speak in front of an audience (teacher-parent meetings, course presentations).
  • You get stressed about organizing class events for your students, especially when you have to be present on stage and speak in public.
  • You’re an introvert at heart but aspire to come across as confident and more self-assured.
  • You want to overcome your communication challenges and become the best version of yourself.

"I believe that if a child’s first encounter with English is theatrical, active and fun, they will love language learning forever. This belief has been consolidated over the years by the parents and teachers that share with us how their children’s experience following our method encourages them to be more expressive and confident communicating in English."

The Kids English Theatre Teacher Training Academy was founded in 2017. Since then, hundreds of language teachers from around the globe have completed K.E.T. Live & Online training courses.

Miranda's experience in teaching children using the Kids English Theatre Method© has shown her how children learn fastest and what they find most enjoyable.

All her drama activities, chants, role-plays, and stories have been researched and developed over the years. She constantly devises new activities to accompany the lessons, concocting new stories, language games and elaborating comedy skits, puppet plays and chants.

Most importantly, all her exercises have been successfully tried and tested in the classroom. That’s why she can help you save time in structuring your lessons and guide you to develop ideas that will make your lessons creative and engaging straight away.

Miranda also participates in national and international conferences and university seminars for nursery and primary school educators, where she coaches others on how to apply theatre techniques to teaching English.

Lights, Camera, Confidence - Overcoming Video Shyness

Are you active on social media? Ever thought about using it to promote your language courses?

Social media video posts are a great way to help potential students and families get to know you and discover what your courses offer. You might even like the idea of teaching online.

The only catch? You have to get in front of the camera to make the posts.

I started using the Kids English Theatre method this summer, right after I completed the course, and I have to say it has been a huge success 🙂
Many of the kids who attended in the summer are now signing up for our after school courses.

I've had trial lessons with 4-5 and 6-7 year-olds this week which were really successful so now I'm about to start planning my lessons with them.
