ESL Drama Game – What happened to Mr Wolf?

How Mr Wolf can teach a Language

Most teachers are familiar with the classic game “What’s the time Mr Wolf?” Children line up at one side of the room and call out to the child chosen to play the part of Mr Wolf, “What’s the time Mr Wolf?” Mr Wolf answers with “It’s 4 o’clock” for which the children must take 4 steps forward. The game repeats with Mr Wolf changing times and children stepping forward until Mr Wolf decides to call out “It’s dinner time!” and runs to catch the children before they arrive back to the safety of their “home”.

Lots of fun and laughter had from this game. I have found children of all ages love this activity and I have a specially designated “wolf” hat and adjustable clock for some theatrics, to help children “feel” the part and learn telling the time without even realising it!

As an alternative why not play the game by practicing different vocabulary for example “What’s the weather like, Mr Wolf?” For which Wolf can answer “It’s rainy, It’s sunny, It’s cloudy, It’s snowy” – when Mr Wolf says the magic words “It’s stormy”, he runs and tries to catch the other children before they arrive back to the safety of their “home”. Try also “What’s your favourite colour, Mr Wolf?”, “How are you Mr Wolf?” What’s your favourite food, Mr Wolf?” etc.

Children won’t remember by heart all the different vocab so help jog their memory using flashcards as prompts.
Works a trick!

Let me know how you get on.

Happy teaching
and remember be theatrical!
