ESL Drama Game – “THE STICKY DANCE”

“Heads and shoulders” is an all-time favourite for introducing and practicing parts of the body using music and TPR.
But what other ways can children revise body parts, actively?
Try…

“THE STICKY DANCE”
Level: All
Age group: 3+ (I have also played this game successfully with adult groups)
Time: 5 min
Aims: To introduce and practice body vocabulary

The game is played in pairs. The teacher plays some lively music and starts by asking the pairs to stand “back-to-back” coaching them, or better, demonstrating that they should try and dance as if their backs are “stuck” together. After a few seconds dancing back- to- back the teacher calls out a different body part for example “knees-to-knees” indicating that the pairs should try and join their knees together and continue dancing without becoming unstuck from their partner.
The teacher continues to change body parts every few seconds

Examples can include:

– Nose- to- nose
– Feet- to- feet
– Cheek- to- cheek
– Elbow- to- elbow
– Shoulder- to- shoulder
– Head- to- head
– Backside- to- backside (this one creates lots of laughter)
– Ear- to- ear
– Fingers- to- fingers
– Arm- to- arm

Continue suggesting different body parts, the faster the teacher changes the vocab, the more the children must focus on listening and more hilarious they find the activity.

Have fun and remember… be theatrical!
